Stop Valves

As the name implies, stop valves act as an easy way to stop water from flowing. A properly functioning stop valve can make the difference between a mild mess and a destroyed bathroom. They are great for situations like an overflowing toilet, or when you don’t want to cut the main water supply for a small repair. Installed in an accessible portion of the water supply line near the plumbing fixture, stop valves come in a variety of styles for all kinds of needs. Straight stops are typically found on lines that come up from the floor and right into the fixture. Angle stops are designed for lines that come from the wall, but need to turn upwards to reach where they need to go, acting as both a stop valve and an elbow. Finally dual outlets are made for specific situations that need multiple destinations to be controlled on a single valve. Hot water being run to multiple kitchen fixtures is an example of this. Another variation for stop valves comes in the form of quarter versus multi turn units. The difference is simply how much the handle needs to be turned to stop the flow. Multi turn valves are more difficult to complete their seal and do not provide an easy-to-tell visual cue as to whether they are activated or not, unlike the quarter turn. Multi turns can be repaired if their internal components become damaged while quarter turns have to be replaced entirely. Stop valves also vary in their finish. Rough brass units a great for general use, but if your job calls for something that can withstand more abuse the Chrome plated brass units are the way to go. Aesthetics also play a role in the unit selection, so whichever unit looks better with the rest of the bathroom may be the better choice. The final distinctions among stop valves are their connection types. For the inlet connection the options available include compression, sweat, PEX Crimp, Sharkbite, and Press connections. The outlet is typically a compression connection that attaches to a riser or flexible faucet connector. Risers require the use of the included nut and ferrule while the connector screws directly into the stop valve.
