In the aftermath of the Great Dying at the end of the Permian period, life on earth was severely reduced in diversity and in number, and this was most evident in the oceans, with an estimated 81% of all marine species being suddenly wiped out. This left vacant a great number of niches, and with many of the genera that did end up surviving, some on the land made the transition back to an aquatic lifestyle to take up niches once vacated. A notable group of these animals were the Placodonts, an order of reptiles that ranged markedly in size and form, and were among the earliest reptile groups to colonise aquatic environments after the Permian extinction event. They are a small clade, although they nonetheless were diverse, and in the short time they were around, were plastic and adaptive, ranging from the marine but non-pelagic, to near-coast or lagoonal bathyal feeders. I hope you enjoy.
