Breaking Glass is a 1980 British film written and directed by Brian Gibson in his feature debut. It was produced by Davina Belling and Clive Parsons, with additional backing from Dodi Fayed. The film was screened out of competition at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. The cast includes Hazel O’Connor as Kate Crowley, Phil Daniels as Danny, Jonathan Pryce as Ken, Jon Finch as Bob Woods, Gary Tibbs as Dave, Mark Wingett as Tony, Peter-Hugo Daly as Mick, and Charles Wegner as Chris Campbell. Supporting roles feature Richard Griffiths, Michael Kitchen, Jim Broadbent, Nigel Humphreys, Kenneth MacDonald, and others. The story follows the emergence of Kate Crowley, a young singer-songwriter whose talent is recognised by aspiring promoter Danny. Together they form the band Breaking Glass, joined by Tony, Dave, Ken, and Mick. The film traces their rise through small venues and difficult circumstances, leading to a recording contract and increasing public recognition. As pressures from the music industry grow, the group faces internal divisions, personal struggles, and the strains of commercial success. The soundtrack, performed by Hazel O’Connor, was commercially successful, reaching number 5 in the UK charts and achieving Gold certification. Songs from the film, including “Eighth Day” and “Will You,” entered the UK Top 10 singles chart.
