Alan Spence discusses with Norman Bissell how he discovered Eastern thinking and how it has influenced his work, how he was encouraged by Tom McGrath and became a disciple of Sri Chinmoy. He shares his thoughts on Neil Gunn and Kenneth White, his writing of haiku and his novels which are set in Japan. He also reads some of his haiku and other poems and tell us about his forthcoming books. It provides a fascinating insight into how Zen Buddhism and other Eastern thinking has shaped his life and work over many years. This event was organised by the Scottish Centre for Geopoetics and supported by Scottish Book Trust Live Literature funding. Alan Spence is an award-winning poet and playwright, novelist and short story writer. With his wife Janani he runs the Sri Chinmoy Meditation Centre in Edinburgh. His books of fiction include Its Colours They Are Fine, Stone Garden, The Magic Flute, Way to Go, The Pure Land and Night Boat. Poetry collections include Glasgow Zen, Seasons of the Heart, Clear Light and Morning Glory. He is Professor Emeritus in Creative Writing at Aberdeen University, and in 2017 was appointed Edinburgh Makar. In 2018 he was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun from the Government of Japan. Norman Bissell is the author of the poetry collection Slate, Sea and Sky, a Journey from Glasgow to the Isle of Luing and Barnhill a Novel about George Orwell's last years in London, Paris and Jura, both published by Luath Press.
