Aviation climate law, EU ETS aviation reform and CORSIA are under growing pressure as the EU prepares its next review of aviation emissions policy. In this episode of Policy Driven, Tom and Mark examine how EU and global carbon markets collide in aviation. Joined by Steven Truxal, Professor of Air and Space Law and Director of the International Institute of Air and Space Law at Leiden University, and Garry Pratama, a PhD researcher specialising in the interaction between ICAO’s CORSIA scheme and regional regulation, the discussion explores why aviation is legally distinct from other transport sectors. The episode analyses how the EU Emissions Trading System currently applies to aviation, what is at stake in the forthcoming ETS review, and where legal and political tensions emerge between the EU ETS and ICAO’s CORSIA framework. It also examines ReFuelEU Aviation, sustainable aviation fuel regulation, and the risks of litigation, compliance uncertainty and international retaliation as the sector moves towards 2030. Policy Driven is a podcast by the Green Mobility Magazine, focused on global transport, energy and industrial policy.
