How can a turning point with progressive complication manifest in your story? When your protagonist has to deal with a complication that arises as he tries to deal with the inciting incident, that’s a progressive complication. Out of the inciting incident, the protagonist comes up with an initial strategy to deal with what’s going on in the inciting incident. But that strategy doesn’t work because it’s formed with an imperfect evaluation of what the inciting incident means for him. The protagonist tries different aspects of his strategy, and we see him progress while trying everything that he can think of to deal with the inciting incident that fits within their worldview. The protagonist comes up with various ways to deal with the inciting incident based on increasing risk and expense. So the thing that is the safest to do, we as humans will do first, and then the next, and the next. The turning point is the complication and “progressive” means that the level of stakes, cost, and risk increases. The turning point means that the avatar exhausted everything that they know they can do, which forces them to reconsider the strategy that they’ve been applying so far. --- From Story Grid Writing Podcast - Episode 257
