On the night of November 11–12, 1940, twenty-one British Fairey Swordfish biplanes launched from HMS Illustrious and flew into Taranto harbor. In just over an hour, they crippled three Italian battleships and shifted the balance of power in the Mediterranean. The aircraft were slow, fabric-covered biplanes. The harbor was heavily defended. The water was shallow. And yet the attack succeeded. The Battle of Taranto became the first successful carrier-launched torpedo strike against a major fleet in its own anchorage. It proved that naval air power could neutralize battleships without a surface engagement. Japanese naval observers studied the raid closely, and thirteen months later similar tactics appeared at Pearl Harbor. This documentary breaks down the two-wave strike, the reconnaissance that exposed incomplete torpedo nets, the damage to Conte di Cavour, Caio Duilio, and Littorio, and the wider strategic impact on the Mediterranean war.
