Koyasan | THE OUTER SANCTUARY Leaving the center of the mountain behind, we take a slow walk through the edges and boundaries that have watched over Koyasan for centuries. We start in the quiet shadow of the Tokugawa Mausoleum, where the gold lacquer and 1643 carvings still catch the light. Then, we find ourselves at the Nyonin-do, a simple wooden hall that once stood as a final gate—a place where prayers were offered from a distance when the mountain was still closed to the world. As the air warms on the way down to Kudoyama, the journey settles at Jison-in. It’s a gentle place, built on the bond between a monk and his mother, holding onto a quiet history that stretches back to 892 AD. Between the guardian shrines and the old memories of the Sanada clan, the path eventually leads us back to the orange groves and the river. From the grand monuments of shoguns to the softest prayers at the mountain’s foot, this is where the sacred meets the road back home.
