I think it is not right that we pianists mainly play music that spans from the 18th to 20th century. Music definitely existed before Baroque. I am talking about music of the Renaissance. For some reason it is never played on the piano and there may be several reason for that. One the one hand, the piano didn't exist in the 15th century; on the other hand - although it was up to performers, on which instruments to play a certain composition (!!!) still, sacred music was mainly sung. Also, the polyphony of the Renaissance is so complex that not only it has 5-8 voices, but also those voice constantly cross, so writing such music, using traditional notation creates unintelligible mess. Although I modified standard notation in order to accommodate for such difficulties of voice leading, still one more problem to solve was total absence of any tradition, or concept how to interpret such music on modern keyboard instruments. Whether I have succeeded, or not - is up to listeners :) In any way, bringing Renaissance to the piano repertoire gives us extra 200 years of the most sophisticated, very different and very delicate music. Such an extension by all means cannot be bad.
