Trouble in the valley: contaminated groundwater threatens Wisconsin businesses

Near Maiden Rock, along the banks of the Rush River, Larry Brenner built Vino in the Valley into one of western Wisconsin’s most beloved dining destinations. But the clean water his business depends upon is at risk. Larry’s already seen what happens when water becomes unsafe. His other restaurant has failed nitrate tests, forcing warnings to customers that the water is unsafe for consumption. Yet when contamination occurs, the DNR isn’t obligated to notify local health departments, meaning families and small businesses often have no way of knowing their wells are unsafe. Larry’s story is a reminder that clean water is vital to Wisconsin’s communities, businesses, and way of life. Everybody deserves the right to know what’s in their water.
