This is a series of conversations between major theologians and Matthew Barrett on the doctrine of the Trinity. The trinitarian view known as Eternal Functional Subordinationism (EFS) has become a popular position over the last several decades. In this view, the persons – Father, Son, and Spirit – are defined by their relational roles. If left unchecked, then, the Trinity becomes a sort of hierarchical community. Indeed, the central claim of EFS is the Son’s functional subordination, or submission, to the Father in the imminent Trinity. Some even go so far as to apply “supremacy or ultimacy” to the Father which includes authority over the Son and Spirit. It has even been suggested that ultimate glory belongs to the Father alone. Additionally, supporters of EFS have claimed that the Father could act unilaterally, “sidelining” the Son and Spirit, if he so chose, and in fact does so at times. This leads to questions: Are there three wills or centers of consciousness (or even 3 quiddities!) in the Trinity? Can EFS avoid social trinitarianism or tritheism? In this video, Liam Goligher and Matthew Barrett examine the “ingredients” of EFS and compare it to a variety of heresies. Furthermore, Goligher and Barrett address the habit of manipulating the Trinity for societial projects since supporters of EFS frequently use the doctrine in discussions concerning gender roles and other societal issues. Drs. Goligher and Barrett (with a short guest appearance from Liam’s dog) also discuss the evangelical trinitarian controversy of 2016, the Nicene Tradition, and the role of Scripture in theology. For more information concerning these difficult issues, consult chapter 8 of Barrett’s book, Simply Trinity: The Unmanipulated Father, Son, and Spirit (Baker, 2021).
