The Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) Test - What Is It?

Fundus Fluorescein Angiography, or FFA, is a special test done to study the blood vessels of the retina and for other retinal lesions. A fundus camera is used to take the photo of the retina and then a special dye is injected in the vein of the patient's arm and the retina photos are taken with the help of special filters. We may be able to pick up areas of decreased blood supply or areas of abnormal leakage or areas of abnormal new vessels, etc. The test is used often to diagnose the disease and to decide about the retinal laser treatment and to define the areas to be lasered. It is used in diseases like Diabetic Retinopathy, CSR, Macular Degeneration, Vein Occlusions etc. It is a very safe procedure, however rarely there may be some side effects to the injection which can be managed safely in the clinic.
