The Math Behind CHAID Decision Tree Algorithm

In this episode, we will mention the idea behind the CHAID decision trees. It is the acronym of the chi-square automatic interaction detection. It uses chi-square testing to find the most dominant features. The chi-square value of a feature, the higher the statistical signifance it has. Chi-square testing was raised by Karl Pearson which is also inventor of correlation coefficient. We will build a chaid decision tree step by step on the golf data set. The data set is tradational one in data mining studies and it stores golf playing decisions based on outlook, temperature, humidity and wind features. CHAID is the oldest decision tree algorithm.
