The Russian Restrainer of the Apocalypse: The Katechon as a Political Category of Empire Building

In this video, Dr. Dustin J. Byrd, Professor of Philosophy and Religion, discusses the rightwing Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin and his use of the biblical term, Katechon, or "Restrainer" of the Anti-Christ. The notion of the Katechon comes from St. Paul's Epistle to the Thessalonians, wherein he reminds them that a force is holding back the apocalypse. For Hitler's court jurist and theologian, Carl Schmitt, each age has a Katechon. For Dugin, the Katechon today is Russia. As a reconstituted Empire, Russia would be able to hold back the dysgenic forces of Western modernity. But is today's Russia really a conservative "restraining" force, or a new source of international insecurity?
