In the 1950s, researchers from around the world were dispatched to study a disease that was killing a large portion of a tribal population of 11,000 people called the Fore in Papua New Guinea. The Fore people believed that the disease "kuru", which would kill a person swiftly by causing them to lose control of their motor functions and emotions, was a type of sorcery and witchcraft and called it "laughing death", because the first symptoms of the diseases appeared when a person launched into uncontrollable fits of laughter. However, the scientists noticed erie similarities between "kuru" and another neurodegenerative disease called Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) which was found in 1 in a million people. Upon decades or research, trails, and experiments, scientists identified Kuru as well as the cause - ritualist cannibalism amongst the population of Fore of eating their dead.
