The Sampleset of Schwerin Dom / Ladegast : Skip to music: 5:02 👇 👉 Here's a playlist of other organ favorites: • ✨ "Fiat Lux" ✨ Théodore Dubois | Hauptwerk... Virgil Fox (1912–1980) was one of the most influential and controversial American organists of the twentieth century. Known for his unapologetically expressive approach to Bach, he often challenged the restrained traditions of his era by emphasizing color, drama, and communication with his audiences. His arrangement of Komm, süßer Tod (Come, Sweet Death), originally a short aria for voice and continuo, expands Bach’s simple devotional song into a large-scale organ meditation. Built on successive repetitions of the theme with increasingly complex registration, the piece rises from quiet introspection to a massive full-organ climax before receding again to stillness. Fox frequently used it as a concert encore, and his 1964 recording on the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia remains a touchstone for performers and listeners alike.
