Over 700,000 Rohingya refugees arrived in Cox’s Bazar district since August 2017. They join some 200,000 Rohingya who had fled to Bangladesh in previous years. Refugees including pregnant women, the elderly and sick walked for days through the forest to reach Bangladesh, and have settled in and around two main existing settlements, Kutupalong and Nayapara. Resources are now overstretched and with the monsoon season approaching, there is need for emergency preparation. Caritas Bangladesh, under its Emergency Appeal distributed food and life-saving non-food items such as hygiene kits to over 30,000 households. They are now focused on site improvement, such as bamboo reinforcement of protection for slopes, constructing pathways for roads, constructing steps and installation of 72 street lights. They operate six child friendly spaces. Their goal is to expand the shelter upgrading, and wells and sanitation facilities to another 30,000 families.
