Hive equipment is getting more expensive every year. With a small amount of woodworking knowledge it’s still possible to keep bees affordably. In this video I walk through one of my favorite ways to use scrap pieces leftover from other projects. Making an outer cover. This is a piece that typically runs a minimum of $25. Much more expensive than inner covers which currently cost $10 or less. It’s an easy project with lots of room for mistakes. For a Langstroth 10 frame hive, you want a width of at least 16 5/8” and a length of at least 20 1/2”. You can go over on either or both of these and be fine. I measure the edge piece based on the interior measurements to keep it simple. I use a speed square for any necessary angle cuts. When cutting the flashing be sure to use gloves. This stuff is sharp. Scoring and folding is typically all that’s necessary to get the piece. If you want the flashing to cover the entire side, cut a longer piece than the 20” that I used. The result is an nice, inexpensive telescoping lid. This works because it’s an easy, cheap project that costs 1/3rd (or less) of the cost of buying new. #beekeeping #beginnerbeekeeping #beginnerwoodworking
