Emma Woffenden interviewed by Anne Dubos Gestures of Making is an observational film. It features two protagonists: anthropologist Anne Dubos, whose gaze is presented through the eye of the camera, and glassmaker Emma Woffenden, who describes her work in an interview recorded after the film. The video thus offers two points of view on the object in the making: one external, that of the observer who comes to question the technical fabrication without knowing the precise details of the operating chain, and the other, internal, that of the artist who comes to comment on her gesture, which she is watching on video for the first time. The question posed by the film, beyond the technique of making the object, is that of knowledge: what knowledge produces the gesture that makes the object? And where does its conception begin? There's an interplay here between art and production technology, as glassmaking requires great technical skill but also acute artistic sensitivity. How does the artist verbalize her technical skills? The film reveals how the form of the object is in fact a form that travels back in time to the artist's memories and dreams.
