Stretching approximately 1.5 kilometers from the Old City’s Jaffa Gate to the western parts of the modern city, it has served as a major transportation and commercial hub for centuries. Today, Jaffa Road remains a central artery of Jerusalem’s urban life, featuring shops, businesses, cultural landmarks, and public transportation. History Jaffa Road’s origins date back to ancient times when it functioned as a major route connecting Jerusalem with the Mediterranean coast, particularly the port city of Jaffa (now part of Tel Aviv-Yafo). During the Ottoman era, it became an essential link for trade and pilgrimage. The road gained further importance in the 19th century as European powers established religious and institutional presences in Jerusalem. Under the British Mandate (1917–1948), Jaffa Road underwent significant modernization. The British authorities improved its infrastructure, introduced electric lighting, and developed tram services.
