Airwolf unboxing: • Unboxing FLISHRC 500 Size Airwolf RC Helic... Airwolf maiden flight: • Maiden flight of 500 size FLISHRC Airwolf ... Be sure to check my channel for other FLISHRC assembly and build videos! I chose to build this without the ordnance to appreciate the flowing lines of the Bell 222 based machine. This is the non-pro version from FLISHRC. The pro version has extras such as suspension equipped landing gear, opening canopy doors, flat bottom blades, rivet detail, left side tail motor, and factory equipped lighting. When bolting the mechanical assembly into the fuselage, take care to not strip the threads in the Delrin plastic mounts. Best practice is to turn the bolt CCW until the bolt threads "click" into alignment, then begin to turn CW. (this should be the process for all fasteners, all of the time) If you are removing and reattaching the windshield, follow the CCW / CW instructions above so as not to over-enlarge the fiberglass holes. Protective covering on the windows is sometimes on both sides, be sure to remove all of it. I like E6000 glue for certain applications. Excess can be wiped away, wet or dry, without damaging paint. It holds well but items can be removed, unlike epoxy. I used E6000 to attach the LEDs, windows, horizontal stabilizers, tail beacon mast, and other items. The tail fin is solid so the beacon wires had to run outside of the tail. I used a small aluminum tube and chose not to paint it black. Brillianize is a great product for plastic and paint. It eliminates static and leaves a smooth, slippery shine. It is ideal for home TV screens along with many other uses. I decided to use the balance plug of the flight battery for all lights, therefore, some of the LEDs will need resistors. Using one cell of the flight battery at 4.2 supply voltage, the 3v LEDs need a 60 ohm resistor and the 2v LEDs need a 110 ohm resistor. Using a resistor that is close, is acceptable. I had 47 ohm resistors for the 3v LEDs and 100 ohm for the 2v LEDs. Resistors can be attached to the positive or negative wires, it does not matter. Formula to calculate resistor value: Supply voltage minus LED voltage = voltage difference, divided by 20 mAH nominal power draw = resistor value. Example for the red "breathing" led: 4.2v - 2v = 2.2v / .020 = 110 ohm The wiring looks complicated but it is actually easy. After installing the LEDs and their resistors, all positive wires connect directly to the positive wire from the supply cell. Then, using a pigtail to minimize wires count to the switch, all negative wires connect to the switch and the switch connects to the negative wire of the supply cell. A balance plug lead can be sourced by searching online for JST-XH balance connector. Get the one that is the correct cell count for your battery. I like powering lights directly from the battery. Other than the landing light, I don't need to turn them on and off during the flight. Then, I can leave them connected during storage and switch them on at any time for demonstration. The LEDs are wired through one on/off switch and the strobes are wired through another on/off switch. The landing light is activated by a momentary-on button switch that the servo arm presses against when the gear is fully deployed. The landing light is also wired through the LED on/off switch. The lights for the exhaust consist of a zip-tie mount, a short section of aluminum tubing, and then the tubing is covered with translucent sheet plastic. The silky battery blackout bag is from reading glasses. I use them on all of my helicopters if I am trying to hide the battery.
