On February 27, 2026, the world lost one of its most gifted melodic craftsmen: Neil Sedaka (March 13, 1939 – February 27, 2026). As a tribute, I recorded his beloved 1974 hit “Laughter in the Rain” on the beautiful Mascioni pipe organ of Alessandria. Transforming this warm pop ballad into an organ meditation reveals something timeless beneath the arrangement — the purity of Sedaka’s melodic genius. Neil Sedaka was born in Brooklyn, New York, and rose to fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s with classics such as: • Oh! Carol • Calendar Girl • Breaking Up Is Hard to Do After a temporary decline in popularity during the late 1960s, he made a remarkable comeback in the 1970s. Laughter in the Rain (1974) became one of his signature songs, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975. Throughout his career, Sedaka was known for his lyrical sensitivity, elegant melodies, and classical piano background (he studied at Juilliard’s Preparatory Division). Playing this piece on a pipe organ — especially on an Italian Mascioni instrument — creates a fascinating dialogue between American pop craftsmanship and European organ tradition.
