A few days after Christmas in Athens in 2018, the weather was forecast to be sunny for 4 splendid days, and without any hesitation, Alex, Tasos and I set off and headed to one of the wildest and most unique mountaineering area in North-Western Greece, a place called Pindos. This mountain range, the largest in Greece, is also called the “Spine of Greece,” and it is undoubtedly the best environment for adrenaline-filled adventures which provides off-the-beaten-path experience for crazy people like us. It is an untouched area of landscapes of rare natural beauty, with steep ravines, rivers and alpine lakes amongst traditional stone-built villages. We could not have asked for a better environment to escape from our daily routine, commitments and stress. Before setting off to Pindos, we drew up a plan. It was a simple one : First 2 days of downhill ski in the Resort of Vasilitsa to refresh our skills and techniques, and the final 2 days of Skimo Crossing through the Mt. Smolikas Range (second highest Greek mountain). The best experience of the entire trip came in the final 2 days, when we started the long journey from Samarina Village to climb Mt. Smolikas, and to then descend into Pades Village. The breathtaking scenery and the majestic blue sky simply took my breath away in awe! After having reunited with such amazing beauty, I regretted for staying away from Skimo for so many years. With that in mind, my New Year’s resolution was to spend more time on mountain adventures.
