Florence Beatrice Price was an American classical composer, pianist, organist and music teacher. Price is noted as the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, and the first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Fantasy in Purple is an undated song Florence Price setting a poem by Langston Hughes. We hope you can enjoy our interpretation of this song as the lyrics are powerful and mind-blowing. We want you to feel the full experience of listening to the music along side with the words originally in it. Text: Beat the drums of tragedy for me. Beat the drums of tragedy and death. And let the choir sing a stormy song To drown the rattle of my dying breath. Beat the drums, Beat the drums of tragedy for me And let the white violins whirl thin and slow, But blow one blaring trumpet note of sun to go with me To the darkness where I go. -- Piano: Tingting Yao Viola: Amaro Dubois Audio & Video: Mark Woodring Recorded at Harris Concert Hall in the University of Memphis Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music in April/2021. For more information on Amaro's career visit https://www.amarodubois.com
