From British zoos to the wilds of Madagascar, a unique method is being applied to protect wildlife from poachers, agricultural threats and climate change. Scientists at Liverpool John Moores University have developed a thermal fingerprinting technique that detects animals on the ground from the unique heat signature they give off. In astronomy, infrared cameras on telescopes have been used for decades to understand how the universe was formed and evolved. Artificial intelligence is then used to find and classify objects of interest. Now, those same techniques are being used for picking up the heat signal of animals from above. Drones with mounted thermal infrared cameras are flown over animal habitats and, using the same algorithms that classify different astronomical objects, species are counted and mapped using their infrared signature. This method is being called a game-changer for gathering data on wild animals and is already being applied in the biodiversity hotspot of Madagascar, where 90 percent of its wildlife is unique to the island country. Jo Colan went along to see the drones in action at Knowsley Safari in Liverpool. #RAZOR @Razor #CGTNEUROPE @cgtneurope You can also find Razor on: Website: https://www.cgtn.com/europe/razor Instagram: / Facebook: / cgtneuropeof. .
