Remembrance Day Commemorations at the Sikh Troops War Memorial - Victoria Park, Leicester The annual Remembrance Day commemorations at the Sikh Troops War Memorial in Victoria Park, Leicester, took place on Sunday 9 November 2025. The event brought together members of the community to honour the bravery and sacrifice of Sikh and Indian soldiers who served during the World Wars and other military campaigns. The ceremony began with Sir Peter Soulsby, City Mayor of Leicester, laying two wreaths on Peace Walk at the Commonwealth graves. This was followed by a gathering at the Sikh Soldier Statue, where an Ardas—a Sikh prayer of remembrance—was performed to pay tribute to the fallen. Installed in 2022, the statue was designed by artist Taran Singh using 3D technologies, serving as a powerful symbol of the courage and contribution of Sikh soldiers. More than 25 organisations took part in the wreath-laying ceremony, including local Gurdwaras, the Sikh Motorcycle Club, Falcons Primary School, and various community groups. Speeches were delivered by Sir Peter Soulsby, Piara Singh Clair, and Colonel Richard Hurwood DL, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire, each reflecting on the courage and contribution of Sikh and Indian soldiers and their role in upholding peace and freedom. Following the ceremony, refreshments were kindly provided by Gurdwara Shri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji. The event concluded with a shared sense of respect, remembrance, and unity, ahead of the main city Remembrance Service held shortly afterwards. The event was organised by the Sikh Troops War Memorial Committee. Historian Gurinder Singh Mann spoke about the importance of the commemoration, saying: “Events like this are vital in reminding us of the immense sacrifices made by Sikh soldiers during the World Wars. Their bravery and loyalty were unmatched in theatres of war across the world, and it is our duty to ensure their stories are remembered and shared with future generations. The Sikh Troops War Memorial stands as a powerful symbol of their courage and contribution to the fight for freedom and justice.”
