4 Most Underrated Sports Cars From the 80s!

4 Most Underrated Sports Cars From the 80s! In the 1980s, carmakers pushed the limits of design, technology, and performance — but some incredible vehicles never got the attention they deserved. The Buick Reatta, Zimmer Quicksilver, Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo, and ASC McLaren Capri are four examples of underrated machines that combined bold ideas, hand-built craftsmanship, and innovative engineering long before the public was ready for them. Each one tells a different story about creativity, risk, and how timing can make or break a great car. The Buick Reatta was built by hand at the futuristic Reatta Craft Centre in Michigan. With teams of craftsmen, advanced robotics, and even a touchscreen control system decades ahead of its time, it represented the high-tech future of American luxury. Yet, its slow sales and confusing interface doomed it to obscurity. Still, the Reatta’s quality, design, and innovation make it a hidden gem for collectors today. The *Zimmer Quicksilver* came from a dream — literally. Designer Don Johnson imagined a mid-engine American exotic, and Zimmer Motor Cars made it happen by transforming Pontiac Fieros into elegant, stretched luxury sports cars. With handcrafted interiors, extended chassis engineering, and distinctive style, the Quicksilver was pure 1980s flair. Though only about 170 were built, it remains one of the most fascinating examples of small-scale American carmaking. Then there’s the **Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo**, one of the first Mitsubishi models sold directly in the U.S. Its turbocharged engine, digital dashboard, and optional “Twin Stick” gearbox showed Mitsubishi’s commitment to innovation. Light, quick, and technologically advanced, the Cordia proved that Japanese automakers could build fun, affordable performance cars — even if most people didn’t notice at the time. Finally, the ASC McLaren Capri fused American muscle with McLaren racing DNA. Built in tiny numbers, it was the fastest Fox Body car of its era — faster than the Mustang GT and even the SVO. With a 5.0-liter V8, tuned suspension, Recaro seats, and European-inspired styling, the ASC McLaren Capri was an exclusive powerhouse. These four cars represent the spirit of the 1980s: bold innovation, ambitious design, and fearless individuality. They didn’t find mainstream success, but each stands as a reminder that greatness isn’t always recognized right away. In their own ways, they were decades ahead of their time — and today, they deserve a second look. ____ We do not own the footages/images compiled in this video.
