Lombard Street | San Francisco, California San Francisco boasts some of the steepest streets in the country and Lombard Street is no exception. With eight hair-pin turns, this crooked, red bricked road is a unique San Francisco attraction. Lombard Street is claimed to be the “Most Crookedest Street in the World” and sits in the lovely Russian Hill neighborhood surrounded by beautiful Victorian mansions. Some of the most expensive San Francisco real estate is found here. Take a stroll along the steep, pedestrian friendly steps and snap a photo of the gorgeous view at the top overlooking Coit Tower and the cityscape. Lombard Street was re-engineered in the 1920s because the steep 27% gradient made it unsafe for cars to drive down it during that time. The newly designed street added aesthetic appeal with landscaped gardens and red bricks. The gradient is now a safer 16% which is still steep considering the average gradient for pedestrians is about 4%. The speed limit down Lombard Street is 5 MPH, so take is slow and steady driving down this road. To get to Lombard Street, the Powell-Hyde Cable Car will drop you off at the top. You can also take city buses through North Beach to get here. The most popular one is the #30 bus from Union Square. We hope you enjoyed exploring Lombard Street in San Francisco, California with us!
