Heather Hill, president of the National Pork Board, reflects on pork industry accomplishments in 2022 from her family's farm in Indiana. The board of directors and NPB staff worked diligently toward four goals that impact pork producer businesses. First, we’re continuing to bust consumers’ myths about modern pork production. Tackling these commonly held misconceptions builds trust in our industry and our products. Second, sustainability continues to be a strong focus for our team. We are on a mission to protect producers' freedom to operate and demonstrate that pork and crop farming are sustainable. We’re reporting our industry sustainability practices to quantify the stewardship happening every day on farms across the country. Third, we’re being persistent in market development both at home and abroad. American consumers are increasing their consumption of ground pork, and we’re expanding the presence of ground pork in the meat case. Internationally, we export U.S. Pork to more than 95 countries. We’re working to build confidence in U.S. pork and differentiate our product from competitors. This year we’ve seen exponential growth in markets in the Western Hemisphere like Mexico, Colombia and the Caribbean. Finally, we’re helping producers protect their herds from foreign animal disease. With strong demand for our products, we need to ensure business continuity and maintain supply under potential adverse circumstances. That’s why we’re partnering with experts and organizations across the industry and funding research to prevent, prepare and respond to a potential FAD outbreak.
