Inspired by the book of the same name by historian Coll Thrush, “Wrecked” traces the history of multiple iconic shipwrecks on the Pacific Northwest coast and what impacts these wrecks have had on the communities there. The Graveyard of the Pacific, an area of coastline from near Tillamook Bay, Oregon northward to the west coast of Vancouver Island— which includes the dangerous Columbia Bar—has seen more than 2,000 ships wrecked and hundreds of lives lost. With Thrush as your guide, you’ll meet people who live along the Northwest coast today—like two graveyard caretakers, history experts who put a personal twist on some of the area’s most storied shipwrecks and a leader of the Chinook Indian Nation, who explains how Native American tribal culture is still vibrant and alive today. From unmarked graves of sailors to tales of scavenged bounty, shipwrecks often led to a claiming of place, says Thrush. But ships also brought great tragedy—and, at times, opportunity—for the region’s Indigenous people.
