Despite decades of research, maternal and infant outcomes for Black communities has not improved in any appreciable way. What are we missing? In this honest and thought-provoking talk, Karen Sheffield-Abdullah, explores the complexities and realities of Black Maternal Health in the United States. She extends the invitation for us to consider the unique experiences of stress and anxiety Black women face and how we may prioritize novel approaches, such as culturally tailored mindfulness, to address mental and physical health for Black pregnant and postpartum people. Dr. Karen’s passion centers around stress and anxiety in Black women. She focuses on the utilization of holistic, integrative, multi-sector strategies to promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being for Black women. She is particularly interested in offering strategies to reduce the long-term health effects of stress, psychological trauma, anxiety, and depression on women’s health and birth outcomes. Her interests include the bio-psycho-social benefits of self-compassion, mindfulness, and other mind-body therapies as adjuncts to conventional treatment modalities. Dr. Karen has a doctoral degree in nursing from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing and a Master of Science in nursing degree from Yale University. She is a certified nurse-midwife, mindfulness instructor, mental health advocate, and mother of four. Her vision is to create a society where Black women are seen, heard, and valued. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
