Over the weekend, the New York Times reported that South Korea has the ability to create more than 4,300 nuclear bombs. Citing a paper released by the Federation of American Scientists, it said that South Korea has 24 nuclear reactors and a huge stockpile of spent fuel from which it could extract plutonium. Japan also has the material and expertise to build an arsenal of 6,000 weapons. The newspaper says that as North Korea has been racing to build a weapon that for the first time could threaten large American cities, other Asian nations are now reconsidering whether to develop their own nuclear arsenals. Beyond South Korea and Japan, similar discussions are also being made in Australia, Myanmar, Taiwan and Vietnam about whether it makes sense to remain nuclear-free amid heightened fears toward North Korea. The New York Times says these moves reflect the region's growing doubts that the United States will be able to "keep the atomic genie in the bottle". It pointed out that President Trump's aggressive statements against Pyongyang, and his demand for the United States' allies to contribute more to their defense costs, have also intensified such insecurities in the region.
