Join me on a nostalgic journey to Subathu, home to the prestigious 14 Gorkha Training Center, where the 1st and 4th Gorkha Rifles are trained. This trip to my father’s army reunion was filled with pride, tradition, and unforgettable memories. Growing up in the Indian Army community, surrounded by the honor and bravery of the Gorkha regiment, has shaped who I am. As an American, getting permission to visit the base was challenging, but thanks to the incredible officers of 14 GTC, I was able to step back into the 80s, reliving the essence of my ‘army brat’ roots. Experience the salutes, the traditional ‘Namaste Madam’ greetings, the fierce Khukri dance, and the regimental marching band that make the Gorkhas not only some of the world’s fiercest soldiers but also the gentlest and most respectful. This journey was a reminder of the powerful motto that guides the Gorkha regiment: "Kayar honu bhanda marno Ramro" – “Better to die than live like a coward.” If you're curious about life in the Indian Army, the legacy of the Gorkha Rifles, or simply want to relive the charm of this traditional world, join me in celebrating the pride of the Indian Army.
