On 23 acres in Granbury, Texas, Mariah and her husband Paydon are redefining what it means to grow real food. Once a catfish and cattle farm, this land is now home to Cherokee Lake Farms. A no-till, chemical-free, regenerative farm focused on producing nutrient-dense vegetables and fruits while stewarding the land for future generations. Mariah began working this property through a nonprofit and through a miracle was given the opportunity to acquire it. With a degree in horticulture from Tarleton and a background in both aquaponics and hydroponics, she eventually came to a conclusion that the most nutrient-rich food comes from living soil. That realization led her to shift everything toward a fully soil-based, regenerative system. Today, she and Paydon grow only heirloom and open-pollinated varieties. Their farm has grown to include a full acre of intensive vegetable production, a diverse mix of fruit trees and perennial systems, and high tunnels that help them extend their seasons. They utilize cover cropping to handle the brutal Texas summers and work closely with the NRCS to restore pollinator habitats and increase biodiversity. In this video, Mariah and Paydon speak about the realities of no-till farming in Texas. From weed pressure and pest management without chemicals, to the deeper principles that guide their choices.
