Our body is made up of millions of cells, constantly dividing through the natural process of cell division. But sometimes, genetic abnormalities occur during this process. To prevent problems, the body uses two major defense mechanisms: Apoptosis (cell self-destruction) – where abnormal cells destroy themselves. Immune System defense – where immune cells like Natural Killer cells and T-cells circulate in our blood and tissues to identify and eliminate abnormal or precancerous cells. Think of it like a strong police force that keeps our body safe from criminal elements (cancer cells). This is why most of us live cancer-free and healthy lives. But what happens when this system weakens? Due to radiation, genetics, or unhealthy lifestyle habits, some abnormal cells escape early detection. They multiply and move toward becoming cancerous. The immune system still fights, but at this stage, it can only control cancer to some extent. This balance continues until cancer cells gain more mutations and finally overpower the immune system, leading to tumor growth and spread. The key takeaway: Our immune system definitely works against abnormal and cancer cells, but only up to a certain limit. Once cancer crosses that limit, it begins to grow and spread. Why is this understanding important? Because if we know the immune system can fight cancer, we can find ways to strengthen it. This is the foundation of Immunotherapy, a breakthrough cancer treatment that boosts the immune system to target and destroy cancer cells more effectively.
