Wrangell, Alaska Stikine River: Saturn KaBoat Surfs the Braided Porcupine River

This video is about life in Southeast Alaska, leaving from Wrangell and going up the Stikine River beyond the Canadian border and into the Porcupine River tributary. In 2023, we had attempted going up this river in the aluminum jet boat, but the water was too braided and shallow. In 2025, we carried the 15’ Saturn KaBoat inside the metal boat up to the Porcupine River entrance where we deployed the KaBoat and had an easy enjoyable trip up to the river source. This KaBoat has been modified with a UHMW plastic bottom to more easily slip over rocks. The Porcupine River has a braided section followed by a bumpy stretch before entering a calm lake with twin glaciers. We passed a facility that was not identified on the map, but is likely a mining operation of some sort. At the source of the river, there are two glaciers and a lake of icebergs. We were able to drive up to the face of the left glacier, but access to the right glacier was choked off with icebergs. For fun, we floated back down the Stikine River and, although we’d packed to camp on the river that night, we decided to jet back home to our comfy bed.
