Leica D Lux 8 Street Photography in New York | Why I love It

When you walk through New York City with a camera, you quickly realize how overwhelming it can be. So much movement, so many faces, so much life happening all around you. That’s exactly why I wanted to see if the Leica D-Lux 8 could handle the streets of this city. One tiny camera, one pocket-sized tool, and nothing else. In this video, I take you with me on a real street photography journey across Manhattan and beyond, just me and the D Lux 8. This is part of a series where I test different cameras for street photography, from Leica Q3, Leica Q2, Leica M11, Leica SL3, and even compact cameras like the Ricoh GR III. But today is all about the Leica D-Lux 8. The D Lux 8 might look small, but inside you’ve got a Micro Four Thirds sensor with 17 megapixels that delivers far more than people expect. In fact, I’ve been blown away by how much detail you can pull out of a single frame, and how this camera lets you move around New York without calling attention to yourself. If you’ve ever struggled with carrying a big DSLR or even a Leica M body with a Summilux lens, you’ll know what I mean—sometimes it feels like too much. This little Leica compact feels different. It’s discreet, quiet, and makes you feel invisible, which is exactly what you want when you’re capturing candid moments on the street. In this video, I talk about my favorite settings for street photography with the D Lux 8. I go over shutter speeds that freeze the movement of people crossing 5th Avenue, aperture choices for layering subjects in Times Square, ISO adjustments for when the light dips into the subway, and why sometimes I prefer to lock things down with zone focus. I’ll show you how I configure the D-Lux 8 so that it’s fast, predictable, and ready at all times. I also share some of the accessories I use to make this camera more fun and more reliable for street shooting. Things like wrist straps and neck straps from my own brand Owlkrown, cases, and even how I like to carry it in a coat pocket without weighing myself down. If you’re looking for straps or camera essentials, remember you can always use code GSHUTTERS10 for 10% off at Owlkrown. The real story here though isn’t about gear—it’s about the people, the culture, the portraits, the shadows, the reflections, the little details that you miss when you’re too focused on settings. I’ll take you through Chinatown, SoHo, Central Park, and more. I’ll show you how I use the Leica D Lux 8 not just as a camera, but as a way to connect with the city, to see it differently, and to capture its rhythm in black and white and in color. Street photography with Leica has always been special to me. Whether it’s the Leica Q3 with its 28mm Summilux, the Leica M11 Monochrom with a 35mm Summicron, or the Leica D Lux 8, they all push you to slow down, look deeper, and really feel the streets you’re walking through. This video is a continuation of that journey. So if you’re curious about whether the Leica D Lux 8 is worth it for street photography in 2025, if you’ve been searching “Leica D Lux 8 review,” “Leica D Lux 8 street photography test,” “best Leica compact camera,” or “Leica vs Ricoh GR III,” this video is for you. I’ll cover the handling, the image quality, how it compares to bigger Leicas, and whether this might be the perfect companion for anyone who wants to explore photography in its purest form. At the end of the day, cameras are tools, but New York City is the real stage. The Leica D-Lux 8 just happens to be one of those cameras that gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the process. That’s why I wanted to make this video—to share the experience, to walk the streets together, and maybe to inspire you to take your own small camera out there and see what you can discover. Thanks for hanging out with me. Don’t forget to subscribe if you want to follow along with more Leica camera tests, street photography guides, and reviews of cameras like the Leica Q3, Leica SL3, Leica M11P, and of course more compact systems like the D Lux 8.
