Types of a Sentence Parts of Speech Paragraph Writing Article Writing Speech Writing Types of sentences on the basis of purpose Declarative Sentence: The sentence that states facts, describes things or reports events. It always ends with a full stop. Interrogative Sentence: The sentence that asks a question. It always ends with a question mark. Imperative sentence: This type of sentence may or may not have a subject. It expresses an order, a request, an advice, a command, a suggestion etc. It usually ends with a full stop. Exclamatory Sentence: The sentence that expresses surprise, admiration, sorrow, anger, frustration and other feelings. It always ends with an exclamation mark. Types of sentences on the basis of structure Simple Sentence: The sentence has a subject and a verb. It expresses a single thought and can stand on its own. It consists of an independent clause. Compound Sentence: The sentence is made of two or more independent clause connected with a comma, semicolon or conjunction such as and, but, so, yet, or and so on. It has no dependent clause. Complex Sentence: The sentence that has one main clause and at least one dependent clause connected by a conjunction, such as because, although, unless, when since and so on. A sentence can be written in two voices. Active Voice: In active sentences, the person doing the action is the subject of the sentence and the person/thing receiving the action is the object. Passive Voice : In passive sentences, the person or thing receiving the action is the subject and the person doing the action is optionally included near end of the sentence. Parts of Speech There are eight basic parts of speech in the English language: noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction and interjection Paragraph Writing: A paragraph is a group of sentences that expresses a common belief or idea.
