Hama Ebisu and Oka Ebisu. On Yakushima, there are two Ebisu gods. In the past, the fishing grounds around Yakushima were so rich with flying fish that the color of the sea itself would change. In recent years, however, the changes being seen in oceans across Japan have also reached Yakushima… Even the so-called “phantom luxury fish,” Oboso, has become increasingly difficult to catch. They say it’s like “toro from head to tail” —an absolute delicacy! I’d love to try it someday♪ The Tōka Ebisu Festival tells the story of how life on Yakushima has long been deeply connected to both sea and land. Why is it held on January 10? This time, I wasn’t able to uncover a definitive answer. But on this day, the time spent welcoming good fortune, praying for abundant catches, and wishing for safety in daily life is something that is still clearly alive today.
