On the 209th day, I explored the old city of Cairo on foot from north to south. The walk began from Habib Pasha El-Sakakini Palace. A French architect built this mansion in 1897 in the Rococo style. The marble statues that decorate the walls of the building still look lively and enchanting. Allegedly, the owner of the building was a nobleman from Syria who also built a Catholic church in Cairo. Moving south, I stopped at the al-Zahir Baybars Mosque. It was built by Baibars (1223-1277), the 4th Mamluk sultan who, before becoming Sultan, succeeded in defeating the Crusader troops of the French King Luis IX and repulsed the Mongol army at the battle of Ain Jalut. Further south, I entered Bab al-Futuh, Cairo's northern gate built in the 10th century. It is attached to the al-Hakim Mosque (11th century) and is perhaps the reason why the gate remains standing today. From Bab al-Futuh to the south is Al-Muiz Street, the center of handicrafts and cafes in Cairo because of its strategic location in the middle of various mosques, madrassas, and ancient monuments of Cairo. After exiting from Bab Zuwayla, the southern city gate, I headed towards Saladin Citadel, built during the Crusades. Currently, the Muhammad Ali Mosque stands on top of the citadel and has become the icon of Cairo. From here, I will continue visiting the Garbage City, where many Coptic Christians live in Cairo. ___ Stage 1 Route - Sumatra (DONE!): Jakarta - Bandar Lampung - Baturaja - Lahat - Pagar Alam - Bengkulu - Lebong Tandai - Kerinci - Jambi - Kuala Tungkal - Batam - Johor Bahru Stage 2 Route - ASEAN Mainland (DONE!): Johor Bahru - Kuala Tahan - Kota Bharu - Su-Ngai Kolok - Nakhon Si Thammarat - Chaiya - Nakhon Pathom - Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima - Phimai - Nong Khai - Vientiane - Vang Vieng - Luang Prabang - Chiang Rai - Chiang Mai - Pai - Chiang Mai - Chiang Rai - Boten - Kunming, China Stage 3 Route - China (DONE!): Kunming - Dali - Lijiang - Shangri-La - Shambala - Litang - Chengdu - Leshan - Chengdu - Xi'an - Zhangye - Jiayuguan - Dunhuang - Turpan - Urumqi - Almaty, Kazakhstan Stage 4 Route - Central Asia (DONE!): Almaty - Shymkent - Tashkent - Nukus - Muynak - Turtkul - Khiva - Bukhara - Samarkand - Tashkent - Khujand - Fann Mountains - Dushanbe - Kunduz, Afghanistan Stage 5 Route - Afghanistan (DONE!): Kunduz - Samangan - Mazar-i-Sharif - Balkh - Kabul - Bamiyan - Band-e Amir - Yakawlang - Lal - Chagcharan - Herat - Mashhad, Iran Stage 6 Route - Iran (DONE): Mashhad - Tehran - Isfahan - Persepolis - Shiraz - Ahvaz - Shalamcheh Border - Shushtar - Shush - Bandar Abbas - Sharjah, UAE Stage 7 Route (DONE) - Arabian Peninsula: Sharjah - Dubai - Abu Dhabi - Riyadh - Jeddah - Madinah - AlUla - Hegra - Tabuk - Haql - Aqaba, Jordan Stage 8 Route - Jordan and Egypt: Aqaba - Wadi Rum - Petra - Amman - Jerash - Mount Nebo - Madaba - Dead Sea - Nuweiba - Giza - Cairo - Saqqara *Follow my Instagram ( / obeysianipar ) for direct messages **Message me for sponsorship --- Music Credits: And Awaken - Stings by Kevin MacLeod is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/.... --- Chapters: 00:00 Prologue 01:33 Cairo Metro 05:55 Habib Pasha El-Sakakini Palace 08:19 Islamic Cairo 16:49 Al-Mu'izz Street 27:28 Citadel of Saladin
