Dreadsquad presents a new interpretation of the legendary melody “Misirlou” – one of the most recognizable musical motifs in the world, with roots reaching the eastern Mediterranean basin. Known in Greek, Arab, Turkish and Jewish traditions, the piece circulated for decades as a folk melody traveling between the port cities of the former Ottoman Empire. Its title means “Egyptian girl”, and over the years the composition has been performed in many countries and languages, becoming part of the region’s shared musical heritage. The oldest surviving recording of “Misirlou” dates back to 1927 and was recorded in New York by Greek-Ottoman musician Tetos Demetriades. However, the melody had existed long before that as a traditional tune circulating between cultures across the eastern Mediterranean – from Greece and Turkey to the Arab world. During the 20th century “Misirlou” gained international popularity and was interpreted in many different styles – from big band and jazz arrangements to the exotic sounds of the exotica movement. The melody appeared in the repertoires of artists such as Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Xavier Cugat and Edmundo Ross & His Orchestra. For many listeners, however, the most iconic version remains the high-energy surf rock interpretation recorded by Dick Dale in 1962, which returned to global pop culture decades later through the film “Pulp Fiction”. This new version of “Misirlou”, produced by Marek Bogdański, transports the timeless melody into the unexpected world of reggae dub. The track is driven by a pulsating steppers rhythm, deep bass and the organic sound of a live band. The oriental character of the melody meets Jamaican dub aesthetics, creating a hypnotic groove that bridges tradition and modern production. Authenticity is further enhanced by the use of traditional instruments such as the kaval (flute) and the oud. The recording features: Don Fe – flute Craig Crofton – saxophone FootPrint System – kaval, acoustic guitar Guillaume Perrier – oud Butcher Jungle Drummer – drums Robert Horvath – bass Marek Bogdanski – piano, Hammond organ, metallophone, guitar, percussion, production, mix, mastering The result of this international collaboration is a spacious, trance-like track where eastern melodic traditions meet the weight of a reggae bassline and the pulsating energy of a dub mix. Released on Superfly Studio, “Misirlou” is the third single (following “Fool For Love” and “A Wah Do Dem”) announcing the upcoming Dreadsquad album “Voices of the Desert”. The album is a vocal sequel to the instrumental record “Reggae from the Desert”, while “Misirlou” serves as a special piece within this context – an instrumental bridge connecting the two projects.
