A diabolo team from Miaoli has won fresh accolades after setting a new national record. Diabolo is a traditional Chinese sport, descended from the Chinese yo-yo. Recently, a young athlete set a fresh record for the most revolutions around her leg in one minute. The team at Houlong Elementary School in Miaoli has made a name for itself with many medals in the last decade. The team accepts current and former members of the school and provides a rigorous training regimen. Umpires watch a contestant competing at the National All-age School Traditional Sports Contest, not missing a blink. Astonishing skills like this come from years of dedicated practice. This contestant has built up her prowess as a “devil of diabolo.” Hung Yueh-chia recently set a record with 320 revolutions around her leg in one minute, or 5.3 per second. She’s part of the diabolo team at Houlong後龍 Elementary School, which consists of current and former students and provides training at the school during evenings and holidays. Now in its 12th year, it’s a frequent victor at international competitions. Most recently, the team went to compete in Osaka, Japan, where its competitors found universal acclaim. Diabolo team member Through the whole summer vacation, morning and afternoon we train. In the evening we go home, rest and have a good sleep, and prepare to train again the next day.
