We find ourselves in the middle of the plagues, the general unrest and existential crisis of survival of the Jewish nation as we begin our Parsha. And an intransigent leader who cares nothing for people who are under his control. 10:1God said to Moses, “Come to Pharaoh, for I have made him and his courtiers obstinate, so that I may demonstrate these miraculous signs of Mine in his midst, אוַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־משֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה כִּֽי־אֲנִ֞י הִכְבַּ֤דְתִּי אֶת־לִבּוֹ֙ וְאֶת־לֵ֣ב עֲבָדָ֔יו לְמַ֗עַן שִׁתִ֛י אֹֽתֹתַ֥י אֵ֖לֶּה בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ: 2and so that you may recount to your children and grandchildren how I made a mockery of the Egyptians and how I performed My miraculous signs among them. You will then realize that I am God.” Aviva Zornberg teaches that G-d now participates directly – not to limit Pharaoh, b ut rather to hold back and let him be as he is. After all, by now, it is ever so clear that there is no way that Pharaoh will change. He has shown himself to be obstinate and unyielding and G-d will not “save him from himself.” This is the nature and the reality of being human with בחירה חפשית This is not G-d acting upon an individual but acknowledging that this is the nature of this person who was created and accepting that this is the way of human beings that have been created. Parallel to this realization in our drama, the Jewish nation needs to negotiate a virtually impossible situation. We note that ALL people are included in Moses' demand that "every Israelite—including the women—be permitted to leave Egypt" (Exodus 10:9) and that they fully participated in the Exodus itself. Through this Parasha and those to come, we will continue to come to a better and more profound understanding of the critical role that the women played in this narrative. We are taught that through baking the Matzot, developing relationships with their Egyptian neighbors and so many other initiatives that as Rav Avira taught: In the merit of the righteous women that were in that generation, the Jewish people were redeemed from Egypt.
