I kept seeing comments about a 2-string slide bass player named Mark Sandman and his band Morphine. The more I read about the band, I knew I needed to see it live to fully understand it. Watching them perform "Buena" courtesy of ‪@2metersessies‬, I enjoyed seeing them craft such an innovative soundscape with their unusual instrumentation consisting of vocals, drums, a baritone saxophone, and a bass --- a term I'm using rather loosely. As I type this out, that riff is very much still stuck in my head with its repetition almost serving as an ostinato underneath the song's upper layers. I discuss how Mark's "croony" vocal style melds perfectly with his slide usage, the wide-open floor occupied by Dana Colley's bubbling bari sax melodies, some of the odd harmony choices used, and how Billy Conway's tasteful drum performance breathed a ton of dimension into the track's gentle energy.
