On the violent frontier, Josiah “Doc” Scurlock stood apart. Born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama in 1850 and raised in Texas after the Civil War, he pursued something almost unheard of in the West — a formal medical education. Studying at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, he gained skills as a doctor’s assistant and proved himself an exceptional writer and linguist, able to read and speak Spanish fluently. He traveled to Mexico during a deadly yellow fever outbreak, where he faced another danger — a gambling dispute that ended with a bullet tearing through his mouth. He survived, wearing a mustache thereafter to hide the missing teeth. Even before the gunfights that would define his reputation, Scurlock had lived through illness, danger, and near-death — forging a resilience that would serve him in the years to come. With his close friend Charlie Bowdre, Doc tried his hand at peaceful ventures, including a short-lived cheese-making business along Arizona’s Gila River. But opportunity and trouble pulled them into Lincoln County, New Mexico, where land and cattle were controlled by the corrupt Murphy-Dolan faction. After becoming victims of their schemes, Doc threw in with English rancher John Tunstall and soon joined the circle that included Dick Brewer, George and Frank Coe, and Billy the Kid. When Tunstall was murdered in 1878, Scurlock became a founding member of the Regulators. He rode in the ambush of Sheriff William Brady, fought at Blazer’s Mill where he saw Dick Brewer fall, and commanded Regulator forces during the Five-Day Battle in Lincoln. Calm under fire and loyal to his men, he nonetheless recognized when the war was lost — choosing survival over a doomed last stand. Stay tuned for Part 2! Thank you for watching!
