Through their struggles, the protagonist loses his sanity and sees himself as the last human on the planet before the mass extinction is complete. As the story progresses, it blends in some fantasy-esque elements with his hallucinations of seeing a witch who commands him to do her bidding. In the end, he loses all grip on his sanity as the stark, cold reality of a lifeless planet overwhelms him.
