Credit: @李家清晨 You won’t believe how bamboo is transformed into ancient Chinese paper using a 2,000-year-old secret technique. The journey begins with the cutting of bamboo trees. After that, a pit is dug and filled with water, where the bamboo is soaked for more than 100 days. Once removed, the bamboo becomes soft, allowing the fibers (hemp) to be easily separated. The bamboo is then washed in clean water, and the hemp fibers—the main material for paper—are carefully removed one by one. After that, the fibers are soaked in lime water and left for some time. Next, they are taken out and steamed for nine days, a true process of patience. After steaming, the fibers are washed again to remove any remaining lime. Then, they are placed in bags and submerged in water for three more days, followed by a thorough rinsing. The softened hemp is then mashed in a mortar to create a pulp. Meanwhile, star fruit vines are cut into small pieces and soaked overnight. The bamboo pulp is poured into a tank of water and mixed thoroughly. The next day, the water from the soaked star fruit vine is filtered and added to the pulp mixture. This natural chemical helps the pulp fibers suspend evenly in water, allowing the paper to form properly when lifted. A mold and deckle are then used — the mold is a frame with a fine screen to hold the pulp, while the deckle helps create a uniform edge. The mold is dipped into the vat filled with the pulp mixture, forming a fine sheet of wet paper. The wet sheets are then spread over wooden boards and left to dry under the sun. Once completely dry, they are peeled off, revealing the beautiful bamboo paper — smooth, strong, and elegant. For centuries, bamboo paper has been cherished by poets and scholars for its beauty and durability.
