As Black Americans, coming from a society that has completely stripped us from our culture, of which comes our identity, we were made to acknowledge our existence based purely on the color of our skin. This "color consciousness" was and is both a blessing and a curse. For on one hand we had been condemn of our being black by our enslavers and oppressors, while on the other, having nothing else to hold on to, we strove and learned to love ourselves in spite of. This new way of existing not only removed us from our ancestral cultural norms, it invented in us the idea that ALL people from Africa held the view of being black in the same that we did. To our dismay, color is not a standing reality within the African society amongst themselves. It is culture as a people that hold most significance regarding their identity.
