Blondie ~ The Tide Is High 1980 Reggae Purrfection Version

Debbie Harry admits that "The Tide Is High" was not an obvious choice of song for Blondie, but she was so enamored of the men's vocals on the original version of the song as recorded by The Paragons with John Holt as lead singer. It was on a compilation tape she was given and the music immediately appealed to her and Chris Stein and they brought it to the band who not as enthusiastic about it. To evoke a West Indies sound, they brought in three percussionists, adding string and horn arrangements to resemble the original version. Released as a single on November 15, 1980 it entered the chart at #81 and eleven weeks later was the most played song in America making it the third time Blondie hit #1. Harry tells us "You never get blasé about that, It made it doubly exciting because we got all this response from the University Of Alabama football team The Crimson Tide, calling us and playing the song at games and using it as their theme song. We just got a terrific amount of feedback."
