Hi, I'm Rob Nixon. And I don't know much about trucking, but I do know that you need your CDL to get in the industry, your commercial driver's license. Let's find out what getting your CDL is “haul” about. Emily Sweetzer, I go by Emma. I'm 17. I am homeschooled. I am fire science in EMT, and I just get my class B permit. Going for my A. You're going for you’re A. Yep. Now why, why go for you’re A? What's the whole point of getting a CDL? My dad has been a truck driver my whole life. Eddie actually taught him when he was 17. He's now 42. It's awesome. Uh, my brother's been through here. Eddie's just an awesome teacher. And I need my class A and B for firefighting. I'm Tanner McLean. I'm 18. And I've been trying to get in a trucking because my father's been a truck driver since I was really little. Did you, you, have you been off the, the yard yet with big trucks? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. What's that like? You, you almost get a rush from it. Yeah. Like you just then, like, I'm driving a big league down the road. You know, it's how much hard work and dedication went into being in that position. My name is Jacob Cunningham. I'm on Mexico fire. I've been an active member for about four years now. And I'm currently a student of two programs at Region Nine. That includes, uh, truck driving and fire science. Nice. And I'm kicking butt in both of them right now. How old are you? I'm 18. I actually learned how to drive a standard here. Really? Yep. So, what was it like when you got behind the wheel the first time? It was kind of scary, but then I'm like, okay, you know how to do this. You've done this. You've driven tractors. You've driven snowmobiles, four wheelers, side-by-sides etcetera. And it's like falling back on what you already know. Talk to me about like what the school is like, what, what your day-to-day activities are at school. It's awesome. I recommend to anyone like I've, I've never gone to public school. Just homeschooled. So coming here was awesome. I get hands on. We get the bookwork in the morning and then all afternoon, hands-on. I learn hands-on. Yeah. What are the types of things that you do hands-on? Driving. We'll do inspections. We'll just drive--there's the keys. He’s right there helping you along the way. So are you just practicing maneuvers? Backing up? Backing up. Rolling forward. Shifting, learning how to stab shift, everything. Okay, so what's the hardest thing about getting your CDL? There’s nothing really hard about it. He makes it fairly easy. Like how'd you find your purpose to do that? I was a nobody looking to be a somebody, and I found fire science, and it has changed from there. From CDL to now doing EMT United. I've just, there's no limits in life. Why limit yourself when you can do AADE in so much? So I just keep going, building blocks every day. Whatever I can do to better myself. You know, you see the quote, you know, “America's needs move by truck”. Well, that's what it's all about. See you next time on GoYourWayMaine.com. Oh yeah. Like and subscribe for more.
